Brain Engine Strategic Film Marketing Lab

Great films deserve great audiences.

South Africa has no shortage of talented filmmakers.

Every year, remarkable films are written, financed, produced and completed. They premiere at festivals, receive critical acclaim and showcase the extraordinary creativity that exists across our continent.

Yet many struggle to find the audiences they deserve.

Not because the stories aren't good enough.

But because too few filmmakers have been given the opportunity to understand the business of audiences, marketing and distribution.

At Brain Engine, we believe that marketing is not the final stage of filmmaking. It is part of the creative process itself.

The Brain Engine Strategic Film Marketing Lab exists to bridge the gap between storytelling and commercial success by equipping filmmakers with the knowledge, tools and confidence to build audiences long before a film reaches the screen.

Why We Exist

The African screen industry has invested significantly in developing writers, directors, producers and technical talent.

Far less attention has been given to the professionals responsible for ensuring those stories are discovered, experienced and remembered.

Marketing and distribution are often introduced too late, resulting in exceptional films struggling to compete for audience attention in an increasingly crowded entertainment landscape.

We believe audience development should begin at the earliest stages of filmmaking, not after post-production has been completed.

The Strategic Film Marketing Lab was created to help change that.

More Than a Training Programme

This is  an industry-led learning experience that explores the complete commercial life of a film.

Participants develop practical skills in:

  • Distribution Planning
  • Campaign Development
  • Trailer Strategy
  • Film Positioning
  • Cinema Releasing
  • Streaming Platforms
  • Broadcast Distribution

Built for the Industry, by the Industry

The Strategic Film Marketing Lab brings together some of South Africa's leading professionals working across marketing, communications, publicity, exhibition, distribution, streaming and broadcast.

Their collective experience provides participants with practical insights that cannot be found in textbooks.

Because the future of African cinema will be built through collaboration between filmmakers, marketers, distributors, exhibitors, broadcasters and audiences.

Whether you are releasing your first short film or preparing your next feature, the programme is designed to strengthen your commercial understanding of the film industry.

“This course felt like a degree to me and film marketing is important. I feel like South African filmmakers should learn more about content delivery and marketing maybe we could tell our local stories with a global mindset. We could sell our stories and culture through marketing. Let this course continue even next year.”
